Story by Rebecca Bernard

No doubt about it, shooting a gun can be exhilarating and fun! It can also be intimidating. As lucky as we are to have the guidance of many patient and knowledgeable men, there is something to be said about women teaching women in an environment that is often perceived to be male-dominated.

Ladies, did you know that there is a national women’s shooting club with a local chapter right in our back yard? A Girl and a Gun was created for women by women to educate and support women shooters in an empowering environment. What is so exciting about this is that the Iowa Chapter is based out of Davenport Guns, a woman-owned business, in Davenport, Iowa! The local A Girl and a Gun chapter meets twice monthly at Davenport Guns and is lead by female instructors with the goal of teaching members how to shoot better and develop safe gun handling skills.

Our last meeting was quite the experience. Davenport Guns reserved one side of their shooting range for this event and we got to shoot their rental machine guns without charge. What an opportunity! We were provided instruction on the use of the guns before moving to the range, and under one-on-one supervision, everyone was allowed to shoot any or all of the guns of their choice. Our only obligation was to pay for the ammunition we shot. The guys from the shop were awesome and worked nonstop to keep reloading the machine gun magazines so everyone was able to shoot as many of the guns as they wanted. I chose to shoot the M4 Carbine and a Tommy Gun, an opportunity not quite like any other.

The next local A Girl and a Gun meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at 6 PM at Davenport Guns, 3701 Mississippi Avenue, Davenport, IA 52807. Find out more on the chapter’s Facebook group.
